Migrant Workers' Employment Rights Advice Service
The Service considers the term ‘migrant worker’ to be self defining, therefore anyone who considers themselves to be a migrant worker is entitled to support from this service. The term generally refers to someone who has crossed an international boarder, into a country of which they were not originally a national, to work or to look for work.
GMPERAS has established a dedicated employment rights advice service to support migrant workers. This service compliments our general advice service and aims to address the barriers that migrant workers experience in employment and when accessing services.
Many migrant workers are not aware of their employment rights in the UK. They often experience exploitation and discrimination at work. Many factors influence migrant workers’ experience of work such as language barriers and social/cultural differences. Migrant workers often work long hours, which further limits their ability to get the advice and support they need.
The Migrant Workers’ Employment Rights Advice Service aims to meet the specific needs of migrant workers by:
- Providing a free, confidential and accessible employment rights information, advice and support service
- Extending our telephone advice service by offering an evening session
- Offering face-to-face advice and support, in the community where appropriate
- Distributing translated employment rights advice fact sheets
- Providing an interpretation service when required
- Campaigning for improvements to the position of migrant workers
- Providing training on employment rights to other agencies, community groups, jobseekers with permission to work, employers and migrant workers
- Working directly with employers to improve the position of migrant workers.
